Man charged with Belpre Subway robbery

BELPRE – A Belpre man was arrested Monday night for the robbery of a sandwich shop on Washington Boulevard, Belpre police said.

Jason R. Stewart, 21, 809 Morgan Ave., has been lodged in the Washington County Jail in Marietta where he is charged with aggravated armed robbery at Subway, the Belpre Police Department said.

According to the police department, a man wearing a mask and brandishing a hand gun entered the store at about 6:30 p.m. Monday and demanded money. He left the store and fled the area on foot.

Witnesses told police they saw someone running away on a street near the restaurant, the department said.

Off-duty Belpre police officers and Washington County deputy sheriffs circled the area and established a perimeter, the department said. The sheriff’s department brought a bloodhound and tracked the suspect to an area off Rockland Avenue, the department said.

Clothing suspected to have been worn by the robber was found by officers near the railroad tracks a few blocks from Subway, the department said.

Officers patrolling the area located two persons of interest near Rockland Avenue and took them to the police department for questioning, the department said. Stewart was charged.

Details about the second person were unavailable.

Several residents also gave information to officers that led them to a gun and the cash box from Subway, the department said. The money was recovered, the department said.
