Fugitive sex offender arrested in Parkersburg

PARKERSBURG – An alleged fugitive sex offender was arrested in Parkersburg on Tuesday.

William Virgil Abernathy, 33, Parkersburg, was arrested at his home on charges of being a fugitive from justice. He also faces charges of failing to register as a sex offender in Cleburne County, Arkansas.

Detectives with the Parkersburg Police Department and the U.S. Marshal Service arrested Abernathy at his home at 5240 Emerson Ave. without incident.

The U.S. Marshal Service had a warrant for Abernathy’s arrest for failing to register as a sex offender since July 5, 2007. The nationwide search for Abernathy has been ongoing since he failed to complete the ordered sex offender registration, according to officials from Cleburne County, Arkansas.

Abernathy has reportedly lived in Wood County since 2004, according to Parkersburg police. He has been avoiding local authorities since 2007, police said.

According to police, Abernathy was processed at the Parkersburg Police headquarters on Tuesday afternoon.

Abernathy appeared in Wood County Magistrate Court for arraignment. He was denied bond and is being held at the North Central Regional Jail to await his hearing.

Abernathy’s hearing will take place in the Wood County Circuit Court in the next few days, although no official date has been released, police said.

According to officials, the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office in Arkansas has requested that Abernathy be extradited to face his charges there. The extradition request will be addressed during future hearings in Wood County Circuit Court.
