Commission provides aid to veterans picnic

PARKERSBURG – Wood County commissioners approved up to $2,800 to help with expenses for a Veterans Day picnic scheduled for Nov. 10 at Veterans Park.

The picnic is scheduled to begin at noon on Nov. 10 at Veterans Park near the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport. All veterans and their families are invited to attend the festivities which will include entertainment, Carlin’s Battery Civil War re-enactors, National Guard rock climbing wall and other activities.

Gary Farris, with the Veterans Museum of the Mid-Ohio Valley, which sponsors the picnic, said last year the commission contributed $3,500 to help cover expenses for the event.

“We have another contribution coming from southside Wal-Mart, and depending on what they donate, we need a total of $2,800,” Farris said. “We are trying not to ask for too much, but if you could cover the difference that would help. Some of the donations may be food,” he said.

Farris said approximately 400 veterans and their families attended last year’s picnic.

In other business during Monday’s commission meeting, Rick DeVore was sworn in to serve as a court security officer with the sheriff’s department.
