Work on Peoples Bank Theatre underway

MARIETTA – Some small restoration projects will begin this week at the Peoples Bank Theatre on Putnam Street in downtown Marietta.

Preliminary structural work in the theatre’s basement and sidewalk repairs on the Third Street side of the building will begin Tuesday. Funding for the $78,000 project will come from a Community Development Block Grant awarded by the City of Marietta.

Contributions totaling $1.8 million have already been spent on the facility.

The Hippodrome/Colony Historical Theatre Association (HCHTA) is hoping to secure the final $1.2 million of the total $7.5 million project through an investor interested in pursuing New Markets tax credit funding.

The HCHTA will attempt to procure an investor through the end of 2013. However, the credits are not often awarded in Southeast Ohio and the group is prepared to look for ways to cut the cost of the project by half a million dollars and secure the remaining $700,000 from other sources, officials said.

Once completed, it is hoped that the theatre can be part of a downtown entertainment district, the development of which is a collaborative project among the HCHTA, Marietta Main Street, Marietta-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the City of Marietta, Marietta College, Mid-Ohio Valley Players Theatre and the Marietta Community Foundation.
