Stadium Field undergoes final preparations

PARKERSBURG – Things are shaping up for Stadium Field to open today for the Parkersburg High School-Capital football game.

Crews have been hard at work this week getting the finishing touches in place so the stadium can host tonight’s game.

”Things will be a go,” said Ryan Taylor, project engineer on the Stadium Field renovation project. ”The contractor is working late (Thursday evening) and power washing the stadium for a final cleanup (this) morning.”

Officials were uncertain if the ramp compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act would be completed on time or if crews would have to erect temporary wooden railings until the actual aluminum handrail was completed.

”The handrail came in for the ADA ramp so it will be open,” Taylor said. ”The only item that is not complete is the intermediate mesh infill panels. We will use chain link fencing until these arrive.”

Taylor has said crews have been able to get work done a lot quicker than he had initially anticipated.

”Grae-Con Construction has done a great job completing the project,” he said.

Athletic Director Lori Lowers said everything was on track to open today.

The state fire marshal did a walkthrough Thursday and will be back today for a final inspection and issue the occupancy certificate.

”The fire marshal was kind enough to come back (Thursday) afternoon to review progress,” Taylor said ”He was very helpful. We walked through again and will be back (today) to give me the occupancy letter once I complete the fencing.”

Work was continuing well into Thursday evening.

”There are a few things we are working on finishing up and we will be ready to go,” Lowers said. ”It is a huge relief to get to this point. Everyone is excited to be back in the stadium.”

Lowers said fans are excited, the students are excited, the players are excited and the community, as a whole, is excited.

”We are so thankful to the community for helping us make this happen,” she said. ”The people who come (tonight) will be very impressed. It is very beautiful.”
