Stabbing suspect arraigned, set for September trial date

PARKERSBURG – A man indicted for stabbing two people was arraigned after his indictment by last week’s special session of the Wood County grand jury.

Ira Blair Hyde, 54, of 1616 Spring St., Parkersburg, in custody at the North Central Regional Jail, was arraigned Tuesday on the indictment charging him with two counts each of malicious assault and grand larceny. He entered a not guilty plea and a trial was set for Sept. 4 before Judge J.D. Beane.

In May police reports state Hyde allegedly stabbed his neighbors David Whitlock and Mary Alvarado following an argument and later stole a vehicle.

A criminal complaint filed in Wood County Magistrate Court alleges Hyde began yelling at his neighbors from a window. Whitlock of 1614 Spring St. came out into the street to tell Hyde to stop yelling, officials said.

Hyde exited his residence, approached Whitlock and began swinging his arms while holding a knife, officials said. Whitlock was unarmed.

Police said Hyde stabbed Whitlock once in the chest. Alvarado of 1614 Spring St. was stabbed several times by Hyde after trying to stop the dispute, police said.

In other hearings Tuesday:

* Daniel Armando Banales, 33, in custody at the North Central Regional Jail, began trial Tuesday on charges of breaking and entering and petit larceny before Beane. Testimony concluded Tuesday and closing arguments are to begin at 9 a.m. today.

* Doyal Michael Scarberry, 22, in custody at the North Central Regional Jail, entered a plea agreement to plead guilty to charges of malicious assault and conspiracy to commit malicious assault. * Melissa Anne Wagner, 44, in custody at the North Central Regional Jail, was granted a motion to continue her trial. Judge Robert Waters set the new trial date for Sept. 17 and Sept. 3 was set for a pre-trial hearing. She was indicted by the May 2013 grand jury on an embezzlement charge.
