Exchange student speaks to Rotary
PARKERSBURG – Eli Schulz, a 17-year-old exchange student from Germany, has enjoyed the past year she has spent in Parkersburg, learning a new language, a new culture and many new experiences.
Schulz, from Leipzig, has spent the past year with two Parkersburg families as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, attending local schools and learning about Parkersburg, West Virginia and the United States through the exchange program.
She talked about her home in Germany and her experiences in Parkersburg during Monday’s weekly Parkersburg Rotary Club meeting at the Blennerhassett Hotel.
Schulz said she has enjoyed her time in Parkersburg and is interested in returning to the U.S. in the future, although she has not decided what she wants to do as a career.
In addition to her host families, Schulz said she met each month with four other Rotary Youth Exchange students staying in West Virginia to explore different activities and experiences in the region.
“I really liked everything, I really liked the United States, I really liked Parkersburg and all of the people here,” said Schulz, who will be returning home to Germany later this month.
Next Monday, the Parkersburg Rotary Club and the Wood County Rotary Club will be holding the 42nd annual South Mash Memorial Golf Tournament at the Parkersburg Country Club with professional golfer Brittany Lincicome.
This year, the Sour Mash Memorial committee is honoring Larry Martin, who died last year at the age of 58. He was prominent with junior golf throughout the state of West Virginia and founded the Top Flite Junior Tour. More than 3,000 youth golfers have been directly impacted during the past 28 years by what is now known as the Callaway Junior Tour, which Martin created and nurtured.
In addition to the Bryce-Lietzke-Martin Scholarship Fund, money raised through this year’s tournament will help eight local organizations, including Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg, Camden Clark Foundation, Good Samaritan Clinic, Oil, Gas and Industrial Historical Association/Henderson Hall, Latrobe Street Mission, Parkersburg High School Stadium, Wood County Senior Citizens Association and YMCA of Parkersburg.
