Tractor-trailers collide, cause traffic problems

WAVERLY – A traffic accident caused major delays on Interstate 77 in Wood County Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. when two tractor-trailers collided in the northbound lanes, officials said. The roadway, which is already down to one lane from construction, was closed for about two and a half hours under the bridge of the interstate on W.Va. 2.

Chief Terry Hefner with the Waverly Volunteer Fire Department said the two tractor-trailers tried to merge into the same lane, causing them to run into each other.

“It was lucky one didn’t roll,” Hefner said.

Fuel, oil and anti-freeze had to be cleaned up off the roadway causing the major delays.

Hefner said crews were sending northbound traffic to W.Va. 31 to take the Williamstown exit for the interstate.
