Thornton pleads guilty to DUI

PARKERSBURG- A Vienna City Council member arrested on an aggravated DUI charge pleaded guilty in Wood County Magistrate Court to a lesser included offense Tuesday.

Paul E. Thornton Jr., 62, of 615 54th St., Vienna, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence at .08 blood alcohol content or greater.

According to court records, Thornton was sentenced to eight hours and 15 minutes served and was assessed $360.80 in fines and court fees.

Thornton was arrested Feb. 10, 2013, on West Virginia 14 after Wood County sheriff’s deputy Z.M. Schaad observed a red Jeep nearly run off the road, go left of center and weave within the lane.

According to the complaint filed with magistrate court, Thornton was determined to be impaired after he failed three field tests and registered a .163 blood alcohol content on the intoximeter.

As part of the plea, the charge was reduced from aggravated DUI to DUI at .08 or greater.

Calls to Thornton seeking comment were not returned Tuesday evening.
