Teacher takes to the stage at Fairplains

PARKERSBURG – Stephanie Semones is usually known as “Mrs. Semones” to her third-grade students at Fairplains Elementary School.

On Thursday and Friday, she will be a beautiful butterfly and later transform into the March Hare in the Schrader Youth Ballet Company performance of “Alice in Wonderland” at Fairplains and Waverly Elementary schools.

Semones grew up as a dancer with the ballet company and her love for ballet brought her back to teaching ballet and performing with the company, although her first love is teaching her third-grade students at Fairplains.

“Alice in Wonderland” was choreographed and set by Schrader artist-in-residence Robert Royce with additional choreography by Joanne Whitehill. Alice will be played by Jesse Tidquist, Royce’s wife.

The shows at Fairplains and Waverly Elementary schools were financed by the Our Community’s Foundation, making it possible to be presented without cost to the schools and students. The nonprofit Schrader Youth Ballet stages local productions, including its annual “The Nutcracker: Clara’s Dream.”

In addition to the school shows, “Alice in Wonderland” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. June 8 at the Parkersburg South High School auditorium. Tickets are available in advance at the studio, 601 Market St., or at the door the night of the production.
