Students compete for title in auto competition

PARKERSBURG – Students from the Roane-Jackson Technology Center will compete in the AAA-Ford Student Auto Skills contest at 10 a.m. today at the Meadowbrook Mall in Bridgeport.

Schools will be represented by two-student teams that will race the clock to correctly identify and fix intentionally installed “bugs” on identical 2013 Ford Focus vehicles. After properly diagnosing and repairing their vehicle, the teammates must drive their vehicle across a finish line where the car will be inspected for accuracy and workmanship.

Other competing schools in West Virginia are the Mineral County Technology Center in Keyser, South Branch Vocational Technical Center in Petersburg, Preston High School in Kingwood, Putnam Career and Technology Center in Eleanor, Brooke High School in Wellsburg, Lincoln High School in Hamlin, Hampshire High School in Romney, Greenbrier East High School in Fairlea and Mercer County Technology Center in Princeton.

Winning teams will receive scholarships and prizes and will represent West Virginia at the National Finals on June 11 in Dearborn, Mich. The team with the highest combined scores from the national hands-on competition and written exam will be declared “America’s Next Top Auto Technicians.”

Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills will offer $12 million in scholarships this year to students at both the state and national level.
