Bear killed on Jackson Avenue
PARKERSBURG Law enforcement officers shot and killed a bear early today on Jackson Avenue after the animal was loose in Parkersburg, officials said.
Parkersburg Police Chief Joe Martin said the main concern of officials was for the safety of the public. The best option was to exterminate the bear, said Jeff McCrady of the Division of Natural Resources.
The male bear was about 6-feet tall and weighed about 250-300 pounds, officials said. The bear was reported on the loose in Parkersburg Tuesday around 11:45 p.m., Wood County 911 dispatchers said.
The bear was seen in the area of Jefferson Elementary Center, Wharton Nissan and Wells Circle Tuesday night, a dispatcher said. The bear was shot around 12:30 a.m. today.
