Author speaks to area students

KANAWHA -An award-winning West Virginia author is spending the next few days in the area speaking with school children.

Sarah Sullivan spoke to students at Kanawha Elementary School Wednesday and is spending the next few days in the area speaking at schools and the Wood County Young Authors reception.

The tour is courtesy of the Wood County Reading Council.

Sullivan was born in Fairmont, lived in Huntington and maintains a cabin in Greenbrier County, on the edge of Monongahela National Forest, with her family.

“As I look back over the books I’ve written I can see that I write about connections – connections between people of different backgrounds, as well as connections between people and places,” she said. “I think a lot about the need to find a place that feels like home. In fact, that yearning for place was the subject of my graduate lecture at Vermont College. We all need to find a place where we feel like we belong. That yearning or desire for connection can be powerful fuel for a writer.”

Sullivan has three books available, “Dear Baby, Letters from your Big Brother,” “Once Upon a Baby Brother” and the award-winning “Passing the Music Down,” which is based on a true story of a young boy interviewing two older fiddlers.

Sullivan will bring her dulcimer and play songs for the students.

Sullivan’s books are for sale and can be personalized. Each book is $15.

The author spent time Wednesday at Kanawha and Franklin elementary schools and the Parkersburg-Wood County Public Library. Today, she will make presentations at Greenmont and Williamstown elementary schools followed by the Young Authors reception at Ohio Valley University at 5 p.m.

The reception for Wood County winners of the Young Authors contest, with author presentation and awards, begins at 6 p.m. The public is invited.

Friday, Sullivan will be presenting at West Virginia University at Parkersburg, sponsored by the school’s education department. Students from several area schools will be brought in to hear her presentation.
