Area law enforcement agencies seek officers

VIENNA – Entry level police officers are being sought by the Vienna Police Department, the Parkersburg Police Department and Wood County Sheriff’s Office.

All departments follow the same procedure when conducting the tests. Those procedures are determined for city, county and DNR officers. The West Virginia State Police follow a different set of standards, officials said. Once someone passes the written exam they move on to the physical exam and other tests before being accepted into a department. When a department accepts a new officer that officer is sent to the West Virginia State Police Academy for further training, officials said.

The Vienna Police Department will administer a written test for entry-level officers at 9 a.m. May 18 at the Community Building in Jackson Memorial Park. The doors for the test will open at 8:30 a.m., officials ask test-takers to plan accordingly and arrive early to allow time for checking in.

The VPD fitness test will be given at Jackson Middle School at 1 p.m. May 18.

Applications to apply for the VPD should be returned to police headquarters, 604 29th St., Vienna, no later than midnight on May 6. The lobby of the police station is staffed 24 hours a day.

A reminder for Parkersburg and Wood County tests:

Potential officers wishing to apply with the Parkersburg Police Department can take the entry-level officer test Saturday, May 4.

Applications for the Parkersburg test can be picked up at police headquarters or downloaded from www.parkersburgpolice.com. The applications should be returned or received in the mail no later than 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 30.

Sgt. Greg Collins with the Parkersburg Police Department said there are vacancies within the department. Collins said the written portion of the test will be administered at PPD on the second floor. Those who pass the written exam with a 70 percent or higher will be asked back for the second part of the exam, a physical fitness test.

Basic qualifications for becoming an officer include being a citizen of the United States, between the ages of 18 and 40, having earned at least a high school diploma or equivalent and owning a valid driver’s license.

The physical ability standards test set forth by the state of West Virginia for potential officers (city, county and DNR) include being able to do 18 push-ups in one minute, 27 sit-ups in one minute and run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes and 20 seconds or less.

Veterans preference points will be awarded with submission of a DD-214 with the application. Applicants who are certified as an officer through the state of West Virginia will receive a $2,500 bonus payable upon the successful completion of a probationary period.
