Warren BOE approves $460K roof repair bid
VINCENT – The Warren Local Board of Education Monday unanimously approved a bid of $460,000 by Hobbs Industrial Roofing of Canton to make repairs to the roofs of buildings 2 and 3 at the high school and connector corridors.
Hobbs has bid on other projects for the district but has not come in as the low bidder before, said Josh Predovich, project manager for SHP Leading Design of Columbus.
The approval was granted pending completion of due diligence by SHP, but Predovich said his company has worked with Hobbs in the past and he has confidence in the company.
The work would be done over the summer, with the goal of completing it prior to the start of the 2013-14 school year.
* The board voted 5-0 to pass a resolution opposing portions of Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s proposed school funding plan that would fund vouchers for private and parochial schools.
“You’re essentially indicating that you have concerns that public tax dollars would be funneled away … to private and parochial schools,” Superintendent Tom Gibbs said.
The money would not be diverted from a student’s home district – as funding for students attending charter schools or other public districts through open enrollment is – but Gibbs said it still uses money that could otherwise support the state’s public education system.
Gibbs told board members he testified about concerns over the school funding issue before an Ohio House of Representatives subcommittee in Columbus last week. He was one of 100 southern Ohio school officials to go to the Capitol that day on behalf of the Coalition of Rural Appalachian Schools.
They have been asked to return today to testify before the House finance committee, and Gibbs plans to attend.
