School officials learning ACAMS system training

PARKERSBURG – Twenty-one officials from RESA 5’s eight counties are spending four days in Parkersburg undergoing training for the Automated Critical Asset Management System (ACAMS).

ACAMS is a web-based portal designed to help collect and organize critical infrastructure asset data as part of a comprehensive infrastructure protection for planners, homeland security officials, law enforcement personnel and emergency managers.

“It will also assist in identifying critical needs and enhance and tweak systems already in place,” said Rick Gobble, training coordinator for RESA 5.

Gobble said the ACAMS is tied into the Patriot Service packets to provide and promote safer schools. The training, provided by the Department of Homeland Security, stems from federal legislation and is required for all school systems.

He said the system will enhance response to schools by law enforcement and emergency personnel in the event of a terrorist attack or school shooting.

Gobble said 911 centers will have access to the information and should assist responders for better coordination of response to incidents.

“It’s another tool in the tool box,” he said.

It will prioritize safety protocol and identify needs such as additional lockdown systems and lighting.

Officials spent Monday and Tuesday at the RESA 5 office learning the system. Today they will tour and assess Parkersburg South High School for training and then input the data into the system.

Gobble said the four-day session is “training for trainers.” The officials, including school superintendents and transportation officials, will take the system and provide a four-hour in-service course to their county principals.
