Ravenswood woman’s story included in ‘Chicken Soup’ book
PARKERSBURG – A teacher from Ravenswood was selected for the latest anthology of a popular series of inspirational and motivational stories.
“Chicken Soup for the Soul: Parenthood” includes “Our Sunrise” written by Julie Speece, a substitute teacher who plans to begin work on a master’s in special education.
The story about the morning she gave birth to her triplet girls was written about a year ago and submitted to the publication in November. They called and wanted it for the new book.
“I was shocked when they chose me,” Speece said.
“Our Sunrise” is about the day the three girls were born, lying awake in a hospital room with her husband, Tom, and thinking about the six years infertility and the all the procedures they went through to have children. The procedure that worked was the last try, she said.
“It worked,” Speece said.
But the story is about more than that, she said. It is about the first day of their lives as parents, Speece said.
“The beginning of our new life,” she said.
The triplets were born in 1995. Cari, Emily and Kate are now 18 years old.
“The sun has risen and set many times since that perfect, glorious day 17 years ago,” the story said. “And parenting triplets has brought many days of ups and downs, laughter and tears, doubts and fears, memories and unimaginable joys and pains. We had no idea what was in store for us that morning.”
She also wrote about how that day was the last day they would not be parents.
“Do you realize this is the last morning we will ever wake up as just Tommy and Julie,” he whispered.
“When the sun comes up tomorrow morning, we will be ‘Mommy and Daddy’ and there will be three brand new human beings on this earth, all because of you and me.”
“I was just thinking the same thing,’ I smiled.
“I know,” he said. And, he did, because he could read my mind.
Speece plans to write a book someday. She also wrote a column for the local newspaper.
“I’ve always wanted to be a writer,” she said. “I’ve got notebooks and notebooks filled with stories.”
“Our Sunrise” is the first of 101 stories in the book that deals with parenthood. It is in the first chapter, Becoming a Family.
The book was released on March 12. It was published by Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing and is distributed through Simon and Schuster.
