Clark gas station robbed

PARKERSBURG – Police are searching for a man who robbed a north Parkersburg gas station late Wednesday afternoon.

Just after 4 p.m. Wednesday, police officers were dispatched to a robbery at the Clark gas station, 3600 Emerson Ave.

Parkersburg police searched the area of the gas station at the intersection of 36th Street and Emerson Avenue for the suspect who reportedly fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money, officials said. As of late Wednesday night, a suspect had not been arrested, police said.

A preliminary investigation revealed the suspect to be a white male approximately 25 to 28 years old, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 250 to 300 pounds, said Sgt. Greg Collins of the Parkersburg Police Department. The man was described as wearing a gray hoodie and dark toboggan hat.

Police said the man entered the store concealing his identity and looking through the merchandise. The man left the store on one occasion but returned, concealing his identity again and making conversation with the store clerk, police said.

At one point the clerk said the man used the clerk’s name in conversation, even though store employees are not required to wear name tags, police said.

The man eventually told the store clerk he wanted money, keeping one hand concealed under his clothing, police said. At least one witness told police the suspect had a gun, officials said.

Police said the clerk attempted to call for help while the man was in the store. The man took the phone from the clerk and went to the cash register to begin removing an undisclosed amount of money.

Store employees told police the suspect unsuccessfully attempted to break into a safe before fleeing on foot.

Police detectives were at the scene late Wednesday night, checking video surveillance footage and processing evidence, Collins said.

On Feb. 1, the Peoples News across Emerson Avenue from the Clark gas station was robbed at gunpoint by a masked man. The man got away with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police reports.

The Peoples News suspect was described by witnesses as a 6-foot tall male dressed in black and wearing a black ski mask, police said.

Collins said the robberies are not related and the descriptions of the suspects do not match.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Detective J.M. Stalnaker or any member of the Parkersburg Police Department at 304-424-8444 or leave an anonymous tip at www.parkersburgpolice.com.
