Rockport accident claims one, not two, lives
ROCKPORT – The Parkersburg News and Sentinel on Saturday incorrectly reported that two men had died Friday after a two-vehicle accident near Rockport.
Greg Starcher, 21, of Rockport, died at Camden Clark Medical Center following the accident Friday afternoon on West Virginia 21 near Rockport.
The News and Sentinel incorrectly quoted Chief Deputy Shawn Graham as saying both drivers involved in the accident died. The other driver, Jamie Thompson, 32, of Mineral Wells, was transported to CCMC and later flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown where he was treated and released, according to hospital officials.
The Wood County Sheriff’s Office reported Thompson was driving a Ford F-150 southbound about 2:15 p.m. Friday when he swerved into the northbound lane of W.Va. 21, in the 5000 block, and struck a Chevrolet S-10 driven by Starcher head-on. The cause of the crash has not been determined, deputies said.
After the collision, Starcher’s vehicle was forced into a nearby house.
Damage to the house at 5823 Southern Highway, Rockport, owned by Earl Ryan, was not immediately known, but there was a hole left in the front of the house after the incident, Graham said.
Starcher was pronounced dead at CCMC, according to police.
Graham said the sheriff’s office is investigating the collision and charges will be filed.
