Williamstown council passes flood ordinance amendment

WILLIAMSTOWN City council passed the final reading of the city’s floodplain ordinance amendment during the first meeting of the new year Tuesday evening.

The first reading of the legislation was unanimously passed by the full council during the Dec. 4, 2012, meeting.

At the time of the first reading, Mayor Jean Ford said the amendment is because of the state’s instructions.

This legislation creates management of the floodplain to reduce flood damage through preventive and corrective measures that include zoning, subdivision or building requirements and ordinances to ensure floodplain insurance is available.

“I believe all issues were addressed in this ordinance amendment and we are up-to-date with the state,” said Councilman Marty Seufer.

A quorum was barely met at Tuesday’s council meeting with Seufer, Ron Erb and Barbara Lewis in attendance. Councilman Gene Duncan is on vacation and Ford was absent due to illness.

In other business:

* Council approved an address change request from Ron Flowers, who owns property on Washington Square, to rename lots 1 through 4 Stern Drive.

* A request for a street light on Williams Avenue was met with the suggestion to have Police Chief B.D. Adkins look at the area and come back to council with his recommendation.

* Lewis said the application for Tree City USA has been filled out and is ready to be sent in. If it receives the designation as a Tree City USA this year, it will be the 29th year for Williamstown. The small city is the longest-running Tree City USA in West Virginia.
