California man injured in Athens County crash

ATHENS, Ohio – A California man was injured in a one-vehicle accident Wednesday on U.S. 50 in Athens County, officials said.

Gregory P. Gross, 22, of Poway, Calif., was driving a 2007 Mazda 626 when he lost control and drove off the right side of the road at 1:35 a.m., officials said. His vehicle struck a ditch and overturned multiple times, according to reports.

The Athens Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash, said speed was a factor in the incident. Gross was charged with not wearing a seat belt, failure to maintain control of his vehicle, OVI and speeding. Officials said the road was not closed because of the accident.

Gross was taken by Athens EMS to O’Bleness Memorial Hospital. His condition was not released Wednesday night.

Another accident about 10 minutes after the one on U.S. 50 occurred on Ohio 78 around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, officials said.

Shelby J. Vore, 19, Glouster, Ohio, was driving a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta when she failed to negotiate a left turn and drove off the right side of the road, striking two trees in Athens County, according to police reports.

Vore was left with possible injuries and was charged with aggravated vehicular assault (a third-degree felony), OVI, failure to control and failure to have the passenger fasten a safety belt, said the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Vore’s passenger, Shawn Allen McKee, 22, Glouster, Ohio, was left with incapacitating injuries from the crash, officials said.

McKee was not wearing a seat belt and was taken by medical helicopter to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, officials said. His condition was unavailable from hospital staff Wednesday.
