CVB celebrating National Tourism Week

PARKERSBURG – The Greater Parkersburg Convention & Visitors Bureau will celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week May 1-7 including with an online scavenger hunt next week.

The bureau is encouraging people to learn more about the area by going to GreaterParkersburg.com/ntw through May 7 and solve the identities of eight tourism sites in Wood County with historic significance. Participants who correctly identify all eight locations will be entered to win a grand prize that includes a $50 gift certificate to a local shop, four tickets to Blennerhassett Island and two tickets to a performance of the Parkersburg Actors Guild.

Answers must be emailed to the bureau at info@parkersburgcvb.org by 5 p.m. May 7 to be entered.

National Travel and Tourism Week, America’s annual salute to travel and tourism, was established by a congressional resolution in 1983.

The week unites communities across the country to celebrate what travel means to American jobs, economic growth and personal well-being.

“Just look at the numbers. Travel supports one in nine American jobs, including 1,250 people right here in Wood County,” said Mark Lewis, bureau president. “During National Travel and Tourism Week we will be celebrating what travel means to our community. We ask everyone to join us in saluting this important industry.”

In addition to its benefits for the local economy, travel can also have a positive effect on personal well-being for residents and visitors of Greater Parkersburg.

Numerous research studies have confirmed the positive health effects of travel and time off, from reducing the risk of heart disease to decreasing depression. Using time off to travel with our families is good for everyone, especially our children-kids who travel with their families are more likely to attend college and earn more as adults, Lewis said.

“Think of it this way: if travel were able to run for president in 2016, it’d be the perfect candidate,” said Lewis.

“It’s a job creator, educator, and it’s pro-family and pro-health. This National Travel and Tourism Week, we’re saluting how our dynamic industry contributes to America and continues to do wonders for our businesses and personal lives.”
