Art department opens exhibits

MARIETTA – The Marietta College Art Department will open two new exhibits today at the Hermann Fine Arts Center on the Marietta College campus.

The art department will close its exhibition season with the annual senior capstone exhibition “Eleven,” which will be on display today through May 11 in the Atrium Gallery in the Hermann Fine Arts Center. An opening reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. today.

The exhibition showcases work completed between September and March by Studio Art and Graphic Design seniors enrolled at MC. Pieces include traditional oil paintings, drawings, branding and interactive design.

The projects are representative of the talent of the seniors and what they learned during their four years at Marietta College. The exhibition is named “Eleven” because there are 11 seniors and the exhibition is opening on the 11th of the month.

The exhibition, including the opening reception, is free and open to the public. The Atrium Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 3-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

In the other exhibit opening today, the art department will present “Convergence: Photographs of Marietta That Was” in Gallery 310, which will run today through May 11 at the Hermann Fine Arts Center. The opening reception will be 6-8 p.m. today.

The exhibition features a selection from the more than 10,000 photographs in the Stephen Durward Hoag collection, now a part of MC’s Special Collections. Hoag was influential in Marietta in tourism and was a successful businessman. He photographed events in Marietta from 1945-1980. He also collected and re-photographed prints made by earlier photographers.

The exhibition showcases scenes, people and events in the Marietta area Hoag collected or captured on film. The display includes scenes no longer in existence in Marietta, but remain part of the city’s history.

The show is curated by Marietta College students enrolled in Art History 461: Art of Collecting and Museum Practices. Drawing from Hoag’s extensive collection of black and white prints, the student curators researched, designed and installed the show as a component of the curriculum.

The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Regular hours for Gallery 310 are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
