PARKERSBURG –An exhibit of wildlife and animal portraits will be on display through Sept. 28 at the Parkersburg Art Center.

An opening reception for “Wildlife & Equine Portraits by Merry Cibula” will be 2-4 p.m. Sept. 1 at the art center at Eighth and Market streets in downtown Parkersburg. Admission is $10 for non-members and free for members and children.

The show features the graphite and colored pencil images created by Cibula, a local artist.

“Horses and other animals thrive on Merry’s farm in Athens, Ohio,” said Abby Hayhurst, artistic director at the art center. “These animals also thrive in her nuanced charcoal and colored pencil works. In any of her pieces, the exacting detail in the eye and color and musculature make it clear that these are not idealized studies, but actual four-legged people, as real as your neighbors. These are wildlife portraits.”

Cibula loves to experiment with her own work, combining her love for art and photography, to focus on a unique expression, gesture, movement or moment.

“There is always something to learn and the best drawings are yet to come,” she said.

Cibula is a Society of Animal Artist member and has exhibited extensively in shows throughout the country. She has designed cover illustrations for several equine magazines, contributed illustrations to the American Quarter Horse Museum and the Columbus Zoo and has published five limited edition prints.

“We hope that you are able to join us on Sunday to meet the artist, enjoy snacks, refreshments and experience these animal images that have been treated with such skill and care,” said Hayhurst.

Prints of some of Cibula’s work will be on sale throughout the exhibit. Anyone purchasing one can have their items framed at The Framing Gallery at the PAC. Art center members will receive a 20 percent discount on those and other framing orders.

The Parkersburg Art Center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is $2 for non-members and free for members and children ages 12 and under. Wednesdays are free days.
