Welch to address Civil War Round Table

MARIETTA – The Civil War Round Table of the Mid-Ohio Valley will meet 7 p.m. March 21 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 230 Second St., Marietta.

Speaker is Dan Welch, a teacher and seasonal ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park, who will present “How Did They Get Here? The Last Road North and the Gettysburg Campaign.”

Welch will discuss the paths that led Union and Confederate armies northward across Virginia, Maryland, and into Pennsylvania during the weeks leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg. He will examine the sequence of battles, skirmishes, and events that impacted both armies before the first shot was fired on July 1, 1863.

Welch earned his bachelor’s in instrumental music education from Youngstown State University where he studied under the famed French Hornist William Slocum, and, a master’s in military history with a Civil War era concentration at American Military University. He has studied under historian Allen Guelzo at Gettysburg College.

He is a primary and secondary school educator in northeast Ohio. Welch has served as education programs coordinator for the Gettysburg Foundation and is a seasonal park ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park.

During his tenure with the Park Service, Welch has spoken at Gettysburg’s Mid-Winter Lecture Series on “The Rise and Fall of Hope: Robert E. Lee, George McClellan and the Seven Days Campaign.” He has delivered many programs on both the campaign and battle for school groups, families and visitors of all ages.

In 2016, Welch and Robert Orrison wrote “The Last Road North: A Guide to the Gettysburg Campaign, 1863.” Welch and his wife, Sarah, reside in Boardman, Ohio.

The meeting also will feature the election of officers and directors for the 2019 calendar year.

All Civil War Round Table meetings are open to the public and there is no cost to attend. A donation of $7 per person is suggested to defray a portion of the cost of the event.
