Tartan Day Tea set for April 6 at Unicorn Wine Guild
Proceeds fund Scottish & Celtic Festival
BELPRE — The Tartan Day Tea will be held 2 p.m. April 6 at the Unicorn Wine Guild and Tea Room at 1816 Washington Blvd.
Proceeds from the tea fund the Scottish and Celtic Heritage Festival 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 20 at the Parkersburg City Park Pavilion.
Tickets are $25 and reservations can be made by contacting the Unicorn Wine Guild at 740-423-1300, 866-979-8327 (TEAS) or at the shop.
The tea will include Scottish music, genealogy assistance and door prizes.
The menu will include leek and potato soup, Scottish morning rolls served with butter and jam, smoked salmon and tomato canapes. cucumber-crab tea sandwiches, raspberry shortbread tartlets, treacle oatmeal cookies and tea.
Tartan Day is a congressional-sanctioned national observance intended to celebrate those of Scots descent.
On April 6, 1320, the Scottish Declaration of Arbroath was signed, a document which the forefathers of the U.S. drew upon when writing the Declaration of Independence. In 2004, the National Capital Tartan Day Committee, a coalition of Scottish-American organizations, successfully lobbied the U.S. House of Representatives to create Tartan Day.
On March 9, 2005, the House of Representatives unanimously adopted House Resolution 41, which designated April 6 of each year as National Tartan Day.
The 2019 Scottish and Celtic Heritage Festival will feature day-long Scottish and Irish music and dancing, bagpipers, children’s activities, a raffle, a pot of gold treasure hunt, a bonnie knees competition, Celtic ware vendors, genealogy assistance, food, artisans and storytellers, among others.
