VIENNA — The annual Christmas Brunch of the Junior League of Parkersburg was held at the Parkersburg Country Club featuring a review of the growth and achievements during the past year, according to Jane Burdette, president.

The Christmas Brunch was organized by Priscilla Leavitt and Carmen Hathaway.

The Junior League’s Cook House, under Chairman Kristi Bond, has received a much needed roof, plumbing work was done, received a structural survey and Anne Bailey provided funds to remove a tree endangering the property.

The Children’s Discovery Center Project has been closed out.

The group is still selling cookbooks and has donated copies to the Circles Campaign’s educational and nutritional classes, the Habitat for Humanity for its new homeowners and nine area libraries.

The “Done-in-a Day” projects is guided by Sherry Dugan, chairman. The Junior League supported FaithLink and had its team win at Faithlink’s annual Trivia Contest.

MAD (Making a Difference) and the Junior League supported the Latrobe Street Mission by donating funds to assist in buying linen and volunteering with monthly meals. They collected toiletries to stock area middle schools.

Volunteers, walkers and assistance were provided for Relay for Life. Gardening volunteers assisted with the First Lutheran Church to provide vegetables for the less fortunate. Donations were made to Bountiful Backpacks program and assistance was provided to the Kids Movie Fest.

Fundraisers included the drawing for the winner’s choice of a Ravin 20 Crossbow or $1,500. Kathy Parsons, chairman, said tickets are available through Saturday.

A smaller version of the well-known “Whale of a Sale,” now known as a “Minnow Sale,” was chaired by Carmen Hathaway and was deemed a major success.

The long-term project to complete an accessible playground at the City Park will be completed by the spring. Additional equipment, a courtyard of engraved bricks and a gazebo are part of the complex.

Two areas where work will be focused in 2019 are:

* Work to recognize the local Junior League’s 95th birthday will involve local agencies affected by the Junior League.

* The Junior League recreated a committee from earlier years called “Project Research & Development” with Priscilla Leavitt and Carmen Hathaway working to establish a two-year drug addiction rehabilitation, housing and employment home for women. A board of directors has been established, area support resources created and a final approval by governmental services for the organization is pending approval.

Burdette said, “At this time of year when it is so important to be thankful for what we have received, it is also important to be thankful for what we were able to give.”
