Volcano Days to be held Sept. 28-30

VOLCANO — The 30 annual Volcano Days Antique Engine Show and Festival will be Sept. 28-30 at Mountwood Park, just off U.S. 50 east of Parkersburg.

The festival will feature three days of live entertainment, displays of antique engines, historical lectures and tours, a variety of food concessions, a flea market and a craft show. It commemorates Volcano, the oil boomtown that burned down in 1879 but at one time filled the valley with houses, shops and other business.

There will also be a shingle mill, a flea market, apple butter making, wood mizer demonstrations, corn meal grinding, children’s events, bingo, Sunday church services, a petting zoo, kiddie tractor pulls and other attractions, including wagon rides throughout the park.

The Volcano Museum will be open and guided tours to the Stiles Mansion ruins site will be available during the festival. The mansion tours will be 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available at the visitors center for $10 for adults and $5 for children. The ride begins and ends at the Stiles Administration parking lot.

The mansion was built by William Cooper Stiles Jr., one of the pioneers of the West Virginia and Ohio oil fields. In the late 19th Century, Volcano was an important community in the oil boom sweeping the region.

File Photo Brad Holbert, of Deadwood Creations, was doing chainsaw carving during last year’s event. This year’s festival will be Sept. 28-30.

Wagon transportation throughout the park will be Friday from 5 p.m. until dark, Saturday from 10 a.m. until dark and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
