Wade Powers to present Senior Cello Recital Sunday
PARKERSBURG — Wade Powers, 18, of Wood County will present his Senior Cello Recital with pianist Jimmy Sundquist on Sunday at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church at 1001 Juliana St., Parkersburg.
A reception will follow.
Powers has studied the cello since the age of 4 with master cellist Cynthia Puls of Parkersburg. He has been a four-year member of the W.Va. All State Orchestra, where he was the principal cellist his junior and senior years. He has also been a performer at WVMEA solo and ensemble festivals where he has received all superior ratings and recommendations to the WVMEA State Honors Solo Recital.
Powers performed at the Varga Celebration at UNCG with the Camerata Sweden and when the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra performed as part of its U.S. tours at the Smoot Theatre. He participated with the Cello Company at its annual Halloween and Christmas concerts as well as tours of local elementary schools.
Powers also played trombone as a member of the Parkersburg South High School Marching Band, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band. He was field commander for the marching band for the 2017-2018 season.
Powers plans to further his education at West Virginia University where he will major in biology, with a minor in cello performance. He is the recipient of the Presidential Scholarship to WVU and the Esther Cunningham Memorial Music Scholarship. His long-term goal is to attend medical school.
Powers describes music as a gift — one that he enjoys giving to others. “I like performing for people because I can give them something that they might otherwise rarely get to experience here in Parkersburg. It’s one of my favorite ways to connect with people. Whether I’m playing with someone or for someone, music brings me closer to people. “
