PARKERSBURG — The Guild Builders youth theater program will present “The Little Mermaid Jr.” for two weekends in August at the Guild Playhouse at Eighth and Market streets in downtown Parkersburg.

The show will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Additional performances will be 8 p.m. Aug. 10 and 2:30 and 8 p.m. Aug. 11. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children.

The youth musical is adapted from Disney’s Broadway production and the motion picture. In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, longs to leave her ocean home — and her fins — behind and live in the world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking.

Written to flow seamlessly between land and sea, Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” provides plenty of opportunities to bring these locations to life through creative movement and configurations.

The production staff includes Linda Smith as director, Jean Newton as assistant director, Mara Capati as music director and Jaliyah Townsend as choreographer. Smith said auditions were held in the spring and 37 boys and girls came out for the program, including 19 first-time Guild Builders participants.

“We’ve been in rehearsals for three and a half months,” she said. “That was the start of the actual auditions for the show, our read-through, our blocking and the process of learning their lines, their music and their dances.”

Smith believes the program is instructional but also helps the kids become more mature.

“They have to be reliable … It’s a lot of responsibility and it gives them a chance to learn how to do things professionally,” she said.
