PARKERSBURG — The Parkersburg Art Center will be offering a variety of spring classes and workshops beginning in March, ranging from pottery to knitting to belly dancing.

“We have an tremendous variety of classes for all ages; some old favorites and new ones that we hope will become favorites, too,” said Jessie Siefert the art center’s education director.

Classes are selected based upon requests, as well as the availability of people to teach the classes, she said.

“We try to respond when people express interest in a type of class or a workshop. For example, there has been a big upsurge in people wanting to learn to knit and crochet, so we have added those classes,” she said, adding other new classes include paint-and-fire ceramics, art journaling and belly dancing.

Along with a schedule of one-time-only workshops and multi-week classes, the art center will also offer a series of evening art parties for adults called “FineTimes.” These are social events, and are offered weekly, primarily on Friday evenings in a variety of subjects.

File Photo The Esbenshade Studio will host some of the classes and programs available beginning in March at the Parkersburg Art Center.

“Our FineTimes are great fun! Bring your gang and your choice of refreshments. We supply a teacher and all the materials needed to make something you can take home and display,” Siefert said, adding FineTime schedules and projects are listed on the art center’s website.

Registration for “ArtStart,” the art center’s nationally-recognized pre-school, begins March 3. Parents can sign up children for either a two- or four-mornings per week class. The ArtStart program offers a developmentally appropriate, arts-based curriculum that enhances students’ creative, physical, social, emotional and intellectual development, she said.

Sign-up for Summer “Camp Creativity” also begins March 3, according to Siefert.

“This year, our theme will be the music of the Beatles and the tremendous impact they had on our culture.”

Week-long sessions of camp are offered for ages 4-5, for first through third graders, for fourth through sixth graders, and for teens. Scholarships for Camp Creativity are available for children in the free-or-reduced lunch program of Wood County Schools. Interested parents can get more information about these scholarships by calling the art center.

More information about all classes, pre-school, summer camp and workshops is available on the art center’s website at www.parkersburgartcenter.org or by calling 304-485-3859. Sign-ups will also be taken at the front desk at the Center, located at the corner of Eighth and Market Streets in downtown Parkersburg.
