Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities planned in Parkersburg, Marietta
PARKERSBURG — Several activities are planned to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day which falls on Jan. 15.
* Zion Baptist Church will be honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 3 p.m. Jan. 14 at the church at the corner of Eighth and Clay streets.
The celebration will include area ministers and youth who will speak about how King has affected their life. Music will be provided.
* The Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg will mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day with activities on Jan. 15.
The club will be open on MLK Day for club members from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Membership requires a one page application, proof of age, and $20 annual fee.
With the theme, “The Spirit of Service”, several activities are planned. From 10:30 a.m.-noon, there will be stations offering videos, drama, discussions and team building activities based on “What are you doing for others?” A lunch will be provided at noon.
At 1 p.m., the Boys and Girls Club will hold its “Million Members Million Hours” Service Kickoff by the Keystone Club, a club-based group of 12 teens focused on leadership development and community service. Every club member is challenged to complete an hour of service this year and encouraged to do more.
Member service will be tracked by the club and recognition events will be conducted monthly to recognize the members’ effort and types of service.
From 1:30-3 p.m., there will be three separate service opportunities available at the club facilitated by the Keystone Club. The three projects will focus on helping animals, other children, and seniors.
* The West Virginia University at Parkersburg Social Justice committee will hold a birthday celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 12:15 p.m. Jan. 16 in the WVU-P Theatre in Room 1305.
The program will include a short program of music, video and readings. Birthday cake and punch will be served afterwards.
* Marietta College will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by sponsoring a clothing drive during PioConnect, which takes place in Dyson Baudo Recreation Center from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 15.
The Office of Student Life and the Office of Civic Engagement are seeking groups of volunteers from across campus to cover 30-minute shifts during the clothing drive.
These can be student groups or organizations, faculty and staff from different departments or offices on campus, athletic teams, performing arts groups, etc.
All volunteers will receive a free T-shirt, and organizers are also working on special Marietta College-branded MLK Day buttons to give away.
Finally, all volunteer groups will be entered into a drawing for a special prize.
