PARKERSBURG — Old Man Rivers Mission in Parkersburg is among 32 recipients benefiting from a grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation to the Mountaineer Food Bank.

The food bank recently received $50,000 from the foundation for the purchase of equipment required to store and transport perishable products, such as coolers and refrigerators.

The grant was shared by 32 food banks and agencies served by the Mountaineer Food Bank, said food bank grants coordinator Becky Conrad. Each received equipment totaling about $1,100, she said.

Old Man Rivers received a new refrigeration unit, a cooler, blankets to cover cold food, thermometers and scales, she said.

Wal-Mart is a major benefactor for the Mountaineer Food Bank and other food and feeding organizations in the state.

Thirty-two Wal-Marts in West Virginia have donated more than $1.6 million pounds of food to the food bank. Mountaineer Food Bank, created in 1981, provides food and other household items to 440 feeding programs in 48 counties in West Virginia.
