Operation Christmas Child launches

PARKERSBURG — Collection sites in the area have been announced for the Samaritan’s Purse project Operation Christmas Child, joining nearly 5,000 U.S. locations collecting gift-filled shoeboxes for children in need around the world.

During the National Collection Week Nov. 13-20, Parkersburg residents can fill shoeboxes with school supplies, hygiene items and toys. Operation Christmas Child will deliver the shoeboxes to children affected by war, disease, disaster, poverty and famine.

This year, the 10-county Parkersburg Area team of Operation Christmas Child volunteers hopes to collect more than 10,000 shoebox gifts, Janice Childers, Parkersburg area coordinator, said. The global goal is to help 12 million children.
