LITTLE HOCKING — Little Hocking United Methodist Church is the little church with a big heart.

This small congregation, with an average of 15-16 people attending services, has a large outreach program.

For the last 14 years, the church has had a coat and clothes giveaway in the fall. This year it will be held on Friday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon, said Mary Bahr, outreach chairwoman.

During this time anyone who has a need can come and pick out clothes, coats, shoes, gloves, scarves, hats and boots, Bahr said. Everyone is welcome.

The church usually gives away from 200-400 coats each year and many bags of clothes, boots and other items.

Little Hocking United Methodist Church raises money throughout the year by sponsoring soup suppers and yard sales, with the proceeds helping those in the community.

In addition, other churches and businesses in the area allow the church to put out coat-collecting barrels from September to October. Members visit thrift shops and yard sales throughout the year to collect clothes and coats, Bahr said.

Little Hocking United Methodist Church sponsors 15 children from the Little Hocking School System and provides these children with all their school supplies and tennis shoes for the year, Bahr said. Money for these purchases comes from the church’s outreach fundraisers.

This year the church sponsored the first Little Hocking Community Picnic. This was held at the Little Hocking Park. It is an effort to bring the community together and to help to have fellowship and to network with other churches, community members and businesses, Bahr said.

It was a successful endeavor, she added.

Pastor Rod Brower said the church’s outreach committee works hard year-round to help area residents in need. Members of the committee are always looking for hats, scarves, coats and other clothing items to give away.

“Anyone with a need or desire to keep warm” is invited to Little Hocking United Methodist Church’s clothing giveaway, Brower said.

Little Hocking UM Church is one of the most dedicated outreach congregations he knows of, Brower said.

The church is at 20 Federal Road, across from Little Hocking Elementary School.
