Out of the Darkness Community Walk to be held Sept. 23
PARKERSBURG — The annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk to draw awareness to depression and suicide will be held Sept. 23 at City Park.
Registration is 8:30 a.m. and the ceremonies begin at 10 a.m.
The event is sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a non-profit organization dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education, advocacy and support.
Local chairmen are Dr. Heather McCarter and Jason Ferrebee.
Walkers can wear an honor bead to represent the relationship of the person lost to suicide or their personal battle. Colors are:
White: loss of child
Red: loss of spouse/partner
Orange: loss of sibling
Purple: loss of family member/friend
Silver: loss of military/first responder
Blue: In support of the AFSP suicide prevention cause
Green: For those who personally struggle
Teal: For those with a lived experience
A Memory Wall for pictures will be available and the event typically concludes with a balloon release.
