Youth Expo scheduled for July 21 at City Park

PARKERSBURG — The 10th annual Youth Expo will be July 21 at Parkersburg City Park from 4-7 p.m.

Wood County youth ages 5-21 and their families are invited to attend the free event to learn about area resources such as education, recreation, health and wellness, and other services and resources available throughout the county.

Families will get a chance to talk to organizations about available services including Boys and Girls Club, Children’s Home Society of W.Va., Washington State Community College, Westbrook Health Services, West Virginia University at Parkersburg, WVU Extension Office, Wood County/Parkersburg Library, Workforce Career Advantage, YMCA and many more.

The Youth Expo is sponsored and organized by the Wood County Family Resource Network’s Youth/Adolescent Council.

“The event is designed to be educational, but we try to make it as much fun as we can for the youth,” said Ashley Way-Fankhauser, Wood County FRN executive director. “The Wood County FRN is a clearinghouse for Wood County families so information dissemination is a key goal, but we’re excited to be able to provide free activities and entertainment for children in the community,” said Way-Fankhauser.

This year’s event will feature music, games, food, activities, door prizes, selfie booth, dunk tank, bounce house, face painting, rock painting, the state DUI Simulator, the 911 Mobile Command Center for kids to tour, and the National Guard’s rock wall.

Also, a partnership with the W.Va. Governor’s Highway Safety Program made possible a bicycle safety feature in which bike helmets will be available for giveaway.

The Wood County FRN’s Youth/Adolescent Council has also partnered with the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley to provide free backpacks to students in need.

Wood County students in need from pre-K through 12th grade can receive a backpack for their child any time during the event and need only provide a medical ID card or SNAP certificate that has been issued within the last three months.
