Smoot Theatre to hold auditions for ensemble

PARKERSBURG — The Smoot Theatre Vocal Ensembles will hold auditions for next year at 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the theater.

The Smoot Theatre Children’s Chorus began in 2010 and is for boys and girls who are in grades 4-6 next year.

The chorus group is under the direction of Barbara Full, retired music instructor from Neale School, and the accompanist is Marsha Parsons, retired vocal music teacher at VanDevender Middle School. The chorus will meet at 4:30-6 p.m. Tuesdays throughout the school year.

Young singers must be accompanied by a parent.

Auditions for the chorus will consist of singing “Happy Birthday” and “Are You Sleeping” with all music provided and matching pitches played on the piano. Auditions may be private or with a friend.

Also, those auditioning may sing a song of their own choosing, bringing any music necessary for accompaniment.

In a separate program offered by the Smoot, the Smoot Theatre Boys Ensemble and The Smoot Theatre Girls Ensemble will hold auditions at 4 p.m. May 17-18 at the theater.

The Boys Ensemble is for boys grades seven and up and was formed in 2011 under the direction of Janet Blessing, retired vocal music instructor at Jackson Junior High School. The Girls Ensemble formed in 2015 is for girls grades 7 and up and is under the direction of Cathy Martin, retired Parkersburg High School A Cappella Choir director.

Both groups rehearse on Tuesdays throughout the school year with the girls from 5:30-7 p.m. and the boys from 7-8:30 p.m. A parent must be present at the audition.

Auditions will consist of a check of the vocal range and additional melodic and rhythmic exercises. No prepared solo is required.
