Wood County Spring Gardening Seminar and Plant Sale today

PARKERSBURG — The Wood County Spring Gardening Seminar and Plant Sale will be 6 p.m. today at the Parkersburg Municipal Building.

People with an interest in gardening, whether experienced or inexperienced, who want to learn more and talk with people with a wide range of experiences can attend the event, said J.J. Barrett, the agriculture agent for WVU Extension in Wood County.

“The Spring Gardening Seminar is a great educational opportunity for gardening enthusiasts of all ages in the Mid-Ohio Valley” he said. “The speakers we have this year are phenomenal, plus the seminar provides a great opportunity to network with other gardeners.”

Speakers will include Zach Fowler, director of WVU Core Arboretum and clinical assistant professor of biology at West Virginia University, who will be talking about the arboretum; “Growing Medicinal Herbs” will be presented by David Hawkins, owner of Mother Earth Foods; Barrett will be presenting “All About Asparagus”; “Native Trees for the Backyard Landscape” will be discussed by Turner Sharp, a retired West Virginia forester, and beekeeper Jan Ott of Washington, W.Va., will be teaching “Bee Keeping Basics.”

The Wood County Extension Master Gardeners, a program of the WVU Extension Service, is sponsoring the event. Refreshments will be served at 7 p.m., door prizes are given away and there will be a variety of plants for purchase.

“The spring seminar is always a great learning experience,” said Linda Fiore, a local Master Gardener. “The food is always great, the topics and speakers are so knowledgeable and I enjoy discussing gardening with other likeminded people. I look forward to this event every year.”

Master Gardeners are volunteers who are trained in small-scale food production, horticulture and gardening through the training course. These volunteers, in turn, share their knowledge with the community.

Master Gardeners undertake community-based gardening projects and help the public find solutions to gardening and horticulture problems. The Parkersburg-Wood County Public Library Arboretum, The Armstrong Garden in Williamstown, The Boys and Girls Club Garden and Edison Arboretum are some of the projects the Master Gardeners work on, the organization said.

“The Master Gardener Program is a great way to enhance your gardening knowledge not only for personal use, but also to enable a person to assist their community through Master Gardener programs and efforts,” said Marty Seufer of the Wood County Extension Master Gardeners.

“Don’t forget about the plant sale,” said Wood County Master Gardener Natalie Linder. “I enjoy my volunteer work as a Master Gardener organizing the plant sale. We will offer a variety of flowers, herbs, vegetables and other items.”

The event has something for everyone, said Tony Playtis, president of the Wood County Extension Master Gardeners.

There is no cost to attend, but people are asked to contact the WVU Extension Office at 304-424-1960 to register.
