VIENNA — United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley will hold its second annual signature event, Laugh United: A Night of Cocktails and Comedy, at 7 p.m. Saturday at Grand Pointe Conference Center in Vienna.

The event will feature veteran touring comic and Bob & Tom Show legend Drew Hastings.

Hastings is a comedian and storyteller for more than 25 years. He is known as an edgy, intelligent performer in venues across America, said a press release.

His onstage presence is described as hilarious and self-deprecating, including observations of the human condition and the declining state of American society. Hastings’ comedy specials, late-night TV appearances, and his status as a favorite on the syndicated Bob & Tom radio show have given him a wide following.

In 2006, Hastings left Hollywood after 13 years there. Wanting to jumpstart his creativity and go somewhere foreign to him, he opted to go rural and try his hand at farming at age 50.

When asked if it was culture shock moving from Los Angeles to rural Ohio, Hastings replied, “You assume that there’s actually culture in L.A.?”

Elected in 2012 as mayor of Hillsboro, Ohio, Hastings gave this reason for running: “I think this country is going to hell in a hand basket. I’m not sure we even make our own handbaskets here anymore. I can’t do anything about the whole U.S. but I can do something about the one place I live.”

He won in a landslide, has turned the city around financially and works hard on small-city issues, a press release states. Hastings won his second term by a wide margin. As mayor, he’s described as outspoken, politically incorrect, and passionate about economic development.

The United Way Alliance launched Laugh United as its first-ever signature event in April 2016. The event provides an opportunity to create awareness of the United Way organization while giving the community an opportunity to come together for a night of laughter, says Executive Director Stacy DeCicco.

This year’s show will begin with musical guest David Berkeley. Berkeley has amassed a dedicated and widespread following that fully funded the creation of his new album and book. He’s been a guest on “This American Life”, Mountain Stage, CNN, XM Radio’s “Loft Sessions” and NPR’s “Acoustic Cafe.”

The evening event will include a limited number of tickets for a VIP reception at 5:30 p.m. featuring a cocktail hour, hors d’oeuvres, a meet and greet with Hastings and reserved, stage front seating for the show. VIP tickets are priced at $75 per person. General admission tickets are available for $35 per person. Cocktails will be available for purchase throughout the show.

Tickets are available online at uwamov.com/laughunited.

“This event is really meant to be a celebration of the amazing things that the United Way Alliance has been able to do in this community. With an event like Laugh United, we will not only be reaching current supporters of the United Way, but we will be reaching many community members who are just looking for a night out with their friends, some great food and drinks, and some good laughs. This event is the perfect opportunity for that,” DeCicco said.

Event sponsors are PM Company, Mermaid Cleaners, BB&T, First Energy, Kraton, North End Tavern and Brewery, Wells Fargo Advisors, Pickering, Wingate, CAS Cable, Grand Central Mall, Community Bank, and Highmark WV.
