Parkersburg Choral Society Spring Concert slated for Sunday
PARKERSBURG — The Parkersburg Choral Society will host its Spring Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1710 23rd St., Parkersburg.
The concert will be free and open to the public due in part to a grant from Artsbridge. Donations will be accepted at the door. There will be many genres with something for everyone.
The choir will start its journey with pride of the country, “America The Beautiful,” then travel to two German pieces, “Abschiedslied (Song of Farewell)” by Johannes Brahms, and “An Die Musik” by Frank Schubert. The concert will continue with Morten Lauridsen’s “Prayer” and “Ponder Night on a Starry Hill” by Matthew Emery. The traditional Irish folk song, “Tell My Ma,” arranged by Jon Washburn, and “Omnia Sol” by Z. Randall Stroope will bring the choir to intermission.
The choir will return with “Voices of Earth,” a poem by Archibald Lampman, with music by David C. Dickau, “Hushaby” by Ellen Gilson Voth. Then the upbeat “Uncle Joe,” by Neil Ginsberg, will be performed followed by “I Got a Hog and a Pig,” by John Wykoff, where the audience is encouraged to stomp along. The concert will close with Stephen Paulus’s “The Road Home.”
Following the concert, which is handicapped accessible, there will be a free reception. The Parkersburg Choral Society is under the direction of Luke Zyla and accompanied by David Nuss. The Choral Society is always looking for new singers, and audition can be arranged by contacting Zyla at 304-422-6117.
