Marietta College slated to host Community Service Day

MARIETTA — Spring is in the air and residents might be getting that feeling to get out in the community and spend some time in the sunshine while helping Marietta.

Hosted by Marietta College, Community Service Day is Saturday and for those looking for a way to give back while spending time outside, this is the perfect opportunity.

“We really should take pride in the history and beauty of this community by getting out into it,” said Christina McMahon, 38, of Marietta.

McMahon will be joined by students from Marietta College and residents involved in various organizations on Saturday for the spring-time event. Maribeth Saleem-Tanner, director of Civic Engagement for Marietta College, said there are four major projects organized for Saturday.

“Our four major projects include working with Marietta in Bloom, mulching beds with St. Mary Catholic School, collecting donations for the United Way Community Baby Shower and planting trees at Lookout Park,” she said. “We invited any organization that has been a community partner with us to join. Any residents who want to be involved can just show up at registration and they can even eat hot dogs with us afterwards.”

Marietta in Bloom will be prepping all the flower beds to prepare them for planting flowers. Donis Yoder, designer and planner for Marietta in Bloom, said it’s too early to plant flowers but not to prep the beds.

“Our goal is to weed the beds and add mulch where it is necessary,” she said. “We will be focusing on the beds by the Campus Martius Museum, near the Valley Gem, and along the bike path.”

Marietta in Bloom plants flowers in eight beds throughout the city.

“We just want to add more beauty to Marietta. We are also trying to move to more drought-tolerant plants,” Yoder said.

St. Mary School will be mulching part of the River Trail near the Williamstown Bridge.

“We enjoy being a part of the Marietta community and enjoy doing our part to assist in the beauty of the bike path,” said Tammi Bradley, marketing and community relations director for St. Mary School. “We will be providing volunteer hours this Saturday in conjunction with Community Service Day.”

Check-in and registration is in the Great Room of Andrews Hall at 8:30 a.m. Community service begins at 9 a.m. and continues until noon.

“This is one of our favorite events at Marietta College,” said Tanner. “Community Service Day is great because nobody is required to do it. This is just for people who want to connect with the community and help make it a better place. We get as much out of it as we give and that’s incredible.”
