MARIETTA — Michael Kors, Coach, Kate Spade, DKNY, BCBG, Ralph Lauren and Vineyard Vines are just some of the name brands to be featured at the first purse auction hosted by United Way of Washington County.

“We are trying to put the fun in fundraising,” said Amanda Haney-Cech, coordinator for the auction. “This event will be a way and manner to attract a broad audience and share what we do at United Way.”

The event will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Quality Inn located at 700 Pike St. in Marietta.

“We have never done anything like this before,” said Karen Binkley, director of resources for United Way. “It will be a way to raise money for our organization with socialization and purses.”

Tickets for the purse auction are $20 and will include admission and refreshments. Tickets can be purchased at the United Way office located at 307 Putnam St. in Marietta. A total of 22 purses will be available for auction, with a silent auction at 5 p.m. and the live auction following at 6:30 p.m.

The United Way of Washington County is only 60 percent of the way to its 2017 goal of raising $235,000.

“The American Red Cross did a fundraiser like this when there was one in Washington County,” said Binkley. “They had a huge success with it for many years so we are optimistic.”

Haney-Cech said the auction may become an annual event for a long time.

“We will continue to accept donations up through Tuesday,” she said. “I don’t know if many people understand that if you donate $1 to United Way, 99 cents of that dollar goes right back into Washington County. I’m hopeful this will show everyone where the proceeds are going while donating and winning product from it.”

According to Haney-Cech, the purses retail at more than $6,000 combined. Proceeds raised through the auction will benefit the 17 agencies that United Way works with in the community.

These are the Betsey Mills Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County, Boys & Girls Club of Washington County, Caring Connection, Cutler Community Center, Ely Chapman Education Foundation, Eve Inc., Marietta Family YMCA, Mid-Ohio Valley Autism Community, O’Neill Center, Parents and Friends of Hearing Impaired, The Right Path for Washington County, the Salvation Army, Senior Nutrition Program with Washington County Community Action, Washington County Free Clinic and Washington County Harvest of Hope.

Each agency will be creating a centerpiece for the tables at the auction as well.

“It’s going to be a great night for an amazing cause,” said Shawna Cornwell, marketing director for United Way. “Not only will those attending be having fun with friends and family but will also be helping the United Way of Washington County’s 17 agencies.”

Tickets are still available at the United Way office. For more information, contact United Way of Washington County at 740-373-3333.
