Lectures slated at Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History

PARKERSBURG — The Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History will present a series of historical lectures in February during its annual Winter Lecture Series.

The lecture series features a mixture of living history re-enactors and speakers each Sunday at 2 p.m. from Feb. 5-26 at the museum at Second and Juliana streets in downtown Parkersburg.

Reservations are required. Admission is $4 per lecture for Friends of Blennerhassett members and $5 for non-members.

Light refreshments will be served.

Photo Provided Joe and Cheryl Lycan will close out the 2017 Blennerhassett Winter Lecture Series with the program “Frontier Living with Daniel and Rebecca Boone” at 2 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History.

The lecture series is made possible by Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park and Museum, the Blennerhassett Historical Foundation Inc. and the Friends of Blennerhassett.

* The first program in the series on Feb. 5 will be “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Alien” presented by Maestro Grant Cooper with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra.

During the program, Cooper will give an inside look at how music has touched his life, covering a variety of topics that have been important to his life as an artist.

A native of New Zealand, Cooper as served as musical director of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra since 2001.

He announced plans in 2015 to retire and has spent the past year working to finish his time with the orchestra and help with the search for his successor.

* The next program, at 2 p.m. Feb. 12, will be “Blennerhassett Island Archeology: Search for the Blockhouse and Other Recent Investigations Around the Mansion” by Jarrod Burks.

Burks is director of Archeological Geophysics at Ohio Valley Archaelogy Inc. in Columbus.

He has made numerous visits to Blennerhassett Island and will provide up-to-date information on the historic blockhouse, along with information about research and recent investigations around Blennerhassett Mansion.

* The Feb. 19 program is called “Appalachian Trail of Music” featuring Kendra Ward and Bob Bence.

Ward is a champion dulcimer player, musician, author and composer, while Bence is an award-winning guitarist. The program will feature Appalachian folk music and history.

* The final program of the 2017 Winter Lecture Series will be Feb. 26 and will feature re-enactors Joe and Cheryl Lycan presenting “Frontier Living with Daniel and Rebecca Boone.”

Daniel Boone was an early pioneer and frontiersman best known for his work on blazing trails and helping with the settlement of Kentucky. The program by the Lycans will discuss frontier life from the perspectives of Boone and his wife.

Another upcoming event at the Blennerhassett Museum will be the 13th annual Mid-Ohio Valley Quilt Show in March, with quilt displays and related activities.

Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park will open for the season on May 2, 2017, with a variety of special programs and activities through the summer tourism season.
