Retired pastor pens book on golf, spirituality

Photo by Jeff Baughan Jim Yoak, retired pastor of Faith Baptist Church of Vienna, has written a book combining the game of golf with biblical principles. The book is entitled Golf Plus and according to Yoak, each chapter begins with golf and ends with a scriptural lesson.

PARKERSBURG — Life has taken Jim Yoak down many different paths, from Dupont to full time ministry at the age of 50 at Faith Baptist Church in Vienna.

There was one thing on his bucket list he wanted to accomplish.

“I always wanted to write a book,” he said, “but I never had time.”

Draw a line through that portion of the list. Yoak is the author of the book “Golf Plus — Improving Your Life While Enjoying Your Swing.” The book is published by WestBow Press and is 204 pages in length.

“I had initially wanted to write spiritual book but it ended up being a resource book about golf which applies spiritual principals,” Yoak said. “People could use it as a devotional. Each chapter deals with a spiritual lesson and truth. All chapters start with golf but each ends with scripture. It’s beneficial whether you play golf or not.”

Yoak was a 30-year employee of Dupont, beginning in the nylon division before spending the final 14 years in the environmental division. He left Dupont to take over the pastorate at Faith Baptist from 1994-2014.

The cover features a trophy he won in 1965 while working at Dupont, which he says “was a pretty good sized trophy for someone who didn’t win the tournament.”

Yoak stated he began writing the book “soon after finishing at Dupont.” He said the chapters came fairly quickly as far as gathering notes for the book.

“The Bible says ‘So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God’ from Romans 10:17,” he said. “Everything finally came together to get the book done. Hopefully, it’s going to get in the hands of someone who loves golf and at the same time,  it will awaken a want or need for the Word of God in someone.

“God calls us to obey what He says to do and He’ll take care of the rest,” Yoak said. “Maybe one day I’ll know some results of the book. Maybe it will take longer but here it is.”

The book is available through Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Family Christian Bookstore, to name but a few websites.
