Marietta’s Peoples Bank Theatre kicks off season

MARIETTA — Following its first full year in operation following extensive restoration, the historic Peoples Bank Theatre will kick off another season of shows running from mid-January through May.

The series includes a wide variety of live entertainment, from acrobatics and illusions that seem to defy the laws of physics, to classic musical selections by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and The Hit Men, as well as veteran singers including gospel artist Sandi Patty and blues musician Delbert McClinton.

Located at 222 Putnam Street in historic downtown Marietta, Peoples Bank Theatre is managed by the nonprofit Hippodrome/Colony Historical Theatre Association.

* The first show of the new season will be The Hit Men in concert at 8 p.m. Jan. 14.

The Hit Men are a group of legendary performers who have shared the stage with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Carly Simon, Cat Stevens, Elton John, Tommy James and the Shondells, Rod Stewart, Carole King, Jim Croce, Three Dog Night, and more. The Hit Men perform a Billboard Chart topping show of songs from the 1960s and ’70s.

* Golden Dragon Acrobats will perform at 7 p.m. Jan. 27.

The Golden Dragons are recognized throughout the United States and abroad as the premiere Chinese acrobatic touring company. World renowned impresario Danny Chang and choreographer Angela Chang combine award-winning acrobatics, traditional dance, spectacular costumes, ancient and contemporary music and theatrical techniques to present a show of breathtaking skill and spellbinding beauty.

* Sandi Patty will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 at Peoples Bank Theatre.

Patty  is the most awarded female vocalist in contemporary Christian music history, with 40 Dove Awards, as well as five Grammy awards, four Billboard Music Awards, three platinum records, five gold records, and eleven million units sold. She was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and as an Indiana Living Legend in 2007. She has released over 30 albums.

While her 30-year career is heavily rooted in the gospel music industry, Patty has had the opportunity in more recent years to extend her career outside the genre. She has performed with symphonies across the country and also headlined the title role in sold-out performances of the musical “Hello, Dolly!”

* The Jason Bishop Show will be 7 p.m. Feb. 3 and feature illusionist Jason Bishop and his combination of modern music, fast paced magic, sleight of hand and audience participation.

* The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 24.

The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is recognized as one of the best all-around dance bands. Tommy Dorsey, “The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing,” was a master at creating warm, sentimental and always musical moods – at superb dancing and listening tempos. Tommy sustained these moods through the arrangements of the likes of Paul Weston, Axel Stordahl and Sy Oliver, and he showcased singers who could project them brilliantly.

* Delbert McClinton will perform in concert at 8 p.m. March 16.

In conjunction with the 26th annual River City Blues Festival, Peoples Bank Theatre and the Mid-Ohio Valley Blues, Jazz, & Folk Music Society will present a show by McClinton, a multi-Grammy award winner Delbert.

McClinton is a legend among Texas roots music aficionados, not only for his amazing longevity, but for his ability to combine country, blues, soul, and rock as if there were no distinctions between any of them in the best time-honored Texas tradition.

McClinton’s career began in the late 1950s, yet it took him nearly two decades to evolve into a bona fide solo artist. A critics’ darling and favorite of his peers, McClinton never became a household name, but his resurgence in the 1990s helped him earn more widespread respect from both the public at large and the Grammy committee.

Opening for the March 16 concert will be Sadie Johnson, a young rising star of the blues music scene and current Marietta College student. Johnson picked up the guitar at age 6 and was already distinguishing herself as a jazz and blues musician as a teenager. She has played with blues artists Samantha Fish, Kate Moss, Jimmy Carpenter, and Blues Traveler.

* The Irish band Runa will perform at 8 p.m. March 17.

Quickly gaining recognition as one of Irish music’s new “super-groups,” Runa has been enchanting audiences by pushing the boundaries of Irish folk music, since its formation in 2008. Interweaving the haunting melodies and exuberant tunes of Ireland and Scotland with the lush harmonies and intoxicating rhythms of bluegrass, flamenco, blues, jazz, they offer a thrilling and redefining take on traditional music.

The group has been honored internationally, winning Top Group and Top Traditional Group in the Irish Music Awards and an Independent Music Award for Best World/Traditional Song.

* On April 9 at 7 p.m., Peoples Bank Theatre will host the first live recording of Mountain Stage to take place in Marietta. For more than 30 years Mountain Stage with Larry Groce has been the home of live music on public radio.

The two-hour radio show is produced in West Virginia and distributed by National Public Radio weekly on more than 150 stations across America and around the world via NPR Music and mountainstage.org. The show, which is recorded before a live audience, features performances by seasoned legends and emerging stars in genres ranging from folk, blues and country to indie rock, synth pop, world and alternative music, and beyond.

The musical guests for the April 9 show will be announced in early 2017.

* Bookends: Simon & Garfunkel Through the Years will be presented at 8 p.m. April 21.

Bookends featured Dan Haynes and Pete Richards performing a chronological journey through the music of Simon and Garfunkel. The show features interviews with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, original movie footage and live performances by Haynes and Richards, backed by a live string quartet,

* The final show in the news series will be “Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo – Live!” at 7 p.m. May 19.

The show guides families on a breathtaking tour that begins in pre-historic Australia. The audience will observe, meet and interact with an eye-popping collection of life-like dinosaurs and other creatures presented in a theatrical performance that will thrill and entertain kids while stimulating their imaginations. Brought to life by a team of skilled performers and puppeteers, and designed with the help of professional paleontologists, the puppets of Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo are extraordinarily realistic.
