PARKERSBURG – Nominations are being accepted for the 2017 West Virginia Jaycees Outstanding Young West Virginian award, West Virginia Junior Chamber State President Craig Erbacher announced.

Erbacher said that the program identifies and awards young people between 18 and 40 in the Mountain State who have distinguished themselves in their careers or through community service.

“The mission of the West Virginia Junior Chamber, also known as Jaycees, is to promote leadership development and community engagement among young people,” said Erbacher. “This prestigious annual award serves to recognize individuals between the ages of 18 and 40 who exemplify the best attributes of the state’s young active citizens through service or professional achievement.”

Throughout the long history of the Outstanding Young West Virginian program, honorees have represented the heights of progress in all human endeavors with a special emphasis on volunteerism and community service.

Recent recipients have included Landau Eugene Murphy and Grace Pritt. In 2014, Murphy, a Logan native and America’s Got Talent winner, was honored for professional achievement and for raising over $1m dollars for charities in West Virginia. The following year, Pritt, of Hurricane, was recognized for her humanitarianism and volunteer work which included a year-long trip to the Philippines, Swaziland and Nicaragua to help people in need.

Up to three individuals will be recognized at a banquet in Wheeling on Jan. 28. Recipients at the state level are automatically nominated for consideration for the U.S. Junior Chamber Ten Outstanding Young Americans award, a nationally known recognition program in existence since 1939.

Nominations are due by Dec. 17. For more information and nomination instructions, go to OYWVaward.org or call 304-312-6645.
