MARIETTA — Each Halloween season people report their own experiences of hauntings, of paranormal activity and spooky ghost sightings.

Those yearning to have their own supernatural experience can sign up for the ghost tours at The Castle in Marietta on Friday from 7 to  8:30 p.m.

The tour guided by lantern provides the local community with an opportunity to hear or even experience the ghostly activity and occurrences that have been reported throughout the gothic, Victorian mansion.

Kyle Yoho, The Castle’s education director, said the ghost tours have been going on for at least 15 years.

“It’s a fun event where people can interact with what we do here at The Castle and not only get a little bit of the history of our community but also experiencing The Castle at a time where we aren’t usually open,” he said.

There is a limit of 10 people per group and the tours will start every 15 minutes.

The history of The Castle has it as one of the most haunted locations in Marietta, and Yoho said he has heard a few chilling stories during his time there.

“In 1994 a group of volunteers went up in the tower to get a good view of the area and when they came back down the attic door was locked,” said Yoho.  “They couldn’t get out. They had to yell and scream from the tower until a neighbor heard them to find that the door wasn’t even locked.”

Jessica Wielitzka, owner of the Hidden Marietta Tour Company, worked at The Castle for several years and had a few eerie paranormal experiences of her own.

Wielitzka said she had only been at The Castle for two months before she came in contact with her first spirit in the historic home.

“I went in to use the bathroom near the sitting room, which used to be where Jessie Davis (an old resident of the home) would sneak through to spy on people,” said Wielitzka. “I went to flush the toilet and then I felt someone slap my ear, and then I heard a lady grunt as if she were disturbed or upset.”

Wielitzka said she experienced several more occurrences as well.

Yoho said the tour will go through each display room of The Castle while those attending will hear the ghost tours behind them.

“We like to give the ghost tours because people are always interested in it,” said Yoho. “We always get questions on regular tours about ghosts so this is a way to release that to the public.”

Each person must pay $8 to experience the 45-minute tour.

Wietlitzka said the ghost tours are also a great way to connect with other people in the community.

“I think a lot of people have experienced that kind of activity, and when they see that other people have experienced it too they can connect with them,” she said.

She also said the tours are a way to get people interested in local history.

“There may be people on the ghost tours that aren’t too interested in the history of The Castle, and maybe the ghost tours are a way to spark that interest,” said Wietlitzka.
