United Way to host Little Free Library event Friday

ELIZABETH — The United Way and Community Resources Inc. will present a Little Free Library to the newly formed Elizabeth Community Hope Garden on Washington Street at 9 a.m. Friday.

All residents and friends of Wirt County are welcome to attend.

Built in the shape of a small, whimsical house, these structures hold 100 books suitable for children. These can be accessed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for all area children.

The idea is to “take a book and leave a book,” for the purpose of making reading available to all children in Wirt County.

Attending the event will be Carl “Bud” George, councilman, representing the City of Elizabeth; Julie Oldfield, librarian at the Dora B. Woodyard Public Library; Amy Snodgrass and James Dismond of Community Resources Inc., JoAnn Bumgarner of the Hope Shop Food Pantry as well as Stacy DeCicco from United Way MOV.

There will be a special presentation to the Hope Shop Food Pantry. Snacks will be available.

The Community Garden will be available for planting in spring of 2017, and is sponsored by Community Resources Inc., Family Resource Network, The Hope Shop, Wirt Hardware and the Matheny family, the WVU Extension Service, the United Way, the newly formed garden club and interested individuals.

In addition, on Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., during Pioneer Day, an open house will be held at the garden. Landscape plans of the garden will be available and those who are interested will have an opportunity to sign up for a free raised bed in next spring’s garden.

For anyone interested in volunteering at the garden, providing labor or mentoring young gardeners, call Elise Sheppard at 304-275-4292.
