Teachers attend Team JEC Summer Academy

PARKERSBURG – The Team JEC Summer Academy at the Jefferson Elementary Center was held this week when 40 teachers from the school participated in five days of professional development.

The academy ended on Friday.

The Team JEC title was chosen because of the team environment fostered among staff, students, families and the community, organizer Amber Gill, curriculum and instruction administrator at Jefferson, said.

The elementary center has identified the focus of the 2014-15 school year as building vocabulary across the curriculum, designing individualized instruction and continuing to strengthen Team JEC, she said.

“This week has been a wonderful opportunity for team building,” Jeanna Plumly, a teacher, said.

Professional development was based on specific needs for Jefferson Elementary based on staff recommendations.

“We believe all students can learn and experience successful,” Gill said. “We are equipping our teachers with the tools they need to meet specific needs for every child.”

Making presentations at the academy were Brenda Overturf, author of “Word Nerds,” Brenda Clark and Tisha Wall from RESA V, Cindy Noland and Esther Williams, an internationally known speaker, author and counselor.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed this week because I can see caring people who are there because they love their students and want them to be successful,” teacher Megan Greer said.

School starts in about two weeks, Principal Allen Laugh said.

“It is important that we begin school Aug 18 with a clear focus and common instructional language throughout the school,” Laugh said. “It is going to be a great year.”
